Acne scars are lasting changes in the skin that develop after inflamed acne has healed. When pores become clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria, they can swell and damage the deeper layers of the skin, leading to visible skin texture changes after acne.
During the skin healing process, the body produces collagen to repair this damage. If collagen production is too little or too much, it can form scar tissue, resulting in uneven skin texture, depressions, or raised areas commonly seen in acne scars.
